During layup periods may be assigned to other essential work in the District depending on the needs of the organization.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

Work in inclement weather conditions.
This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination.
This position requires a valid Driver's License.
This position requires possession of a U.S. Coast Guard Chief and 1st Assistant Engineer's license.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) 1st Asst Engineer PLD CL 1 without more than normal supervision. Operating, maintaining, and repairing an engine room and associated machinery, refrigeration, plumbing, heating, and/or electrical systems; standing regular watch on a diesel/electric pipeline dredge; and advising Chief Engineer and taking corrective action in accordance with instructions provided. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Incumbent performs work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms and where the parts, equipment, or systems are in hard-to-reach places. Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in a tiring and uncomfortable position. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside subjecting employee to varying climatic conditions, abnormal noises, temperature, danger of burns, irritation from grease and oils, bruises, strains, danger attending moving machinery, falling overboard, electrical shock, falls on slippery decks or steep stairways, possible drowning, an crank case explosion.
