Summary

About the position: This position will be assigned to Outdoor Recreation on McConnell AFB.

The purpose of this position is to maintain and repair a variety of recreational and gardening equipment such as boats, rototillers, lawnmowers, camp trailers, and other miscellaneous recreational equipment.

Duties

Help

1. Performs major and minor maintenance and repairs on a diverse range of equipment and mechanical items ensuring that equipment and rental items are ready for use. Major repairs include lower unit component replacement, e.g., impellers, water pumps, seals and gears. Equipment and mechanical repairs include but are not limited to small and large outboard engines, small and large motor engines, self-contained trailer components, e.g., heating, plumbing, and electrical. Repairs may include the following: tire and bearing replacement, tune-ups of gasoline engines, trailer and vehicle wiring, purging gasoline engines of gas and oil prior to turn-in. Cleans, adjusts, and performs necessary minor maintenance on a wide variety of equipment, e.g., lawnmowers, rotor-tillers, camp trailers, etc. Performs checks for leaks, cracks, electrical systems for shock hazards, performs minor fiberglass repair, inspects and rigs all steering controls, etc. Operates and tests various equipment.

2. Develops, maintains, and records maintenance logs on all mechanical equipment, developing annual inspection checklists for routine maintenance and safety adherence. Submits appropriate requests for supplies, tools, equipment, etc., necessary in order to perform required maintenance. Suggests sources for repairs unable to be accomplished in-house. Maintains adequate bench stock of routinely used parts and supplies necessary for daily maintenance and repairs of shop equipment and rental equipment. Estimates repair and maintenance costs.

3. Ensures that all equipment is maintained and operated within established procedures and safety requirements. Schedules and conducts annual performance and safety inspections on engines and mechanical equipment. Ensures that all safety, fire, environmental and OSHA procedures, hazardous waste compliance and standards are strictly adhered to by all shop personnel and volunteers while assisting or conducting repairs or maintenance on equipment. Routinely inspects and ensures the hazardous waste program is current and in adherence. Maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDS) file folders, updating and revising as necessary. Operates a computer. Performs other related duties as assigned.

CONTROLS OVER WORK: Works independently, supervisor is available to answer any questions or provide assistance. Works from specifications in manufacturer's manuals.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:1. Skill and Knowledge: Ability to test and troubleshoot components and systems equipment defects. Ability to interpret and apply manufacturer's repair manuals and technical specifications, schematics, diagnostic codes, and safety manuals. Ability to operate electronic test equipment.2. Physical Effort: Requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, and reaching. Frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and over 50 pounds with assistance or with mechanical devices. Must be able to satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical.3. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside and is usually dirty and greasy. Exposed to grease, noise, cuts,bruises, and falling or slipping on wet surfaces. Requires caution in working with moving parts during operation of equipment.

Qualifying Experience:

Must have experience in performing minor maintenance and repairs on a diverse range of equipment and mechanical items. This experience must have provided a knowledge of and ability to test and troubleshoot components and systems equipment defects. Ability to interpret and apply manufacturer's repair manuals and technical specifications, schematics, diagnostic codes, and safety manuals. Ability to operate electronic test equipment. Must have basic experience and skill in operating a computer. Requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, and reaching. Frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and over 50 pounds with assistance or with mechanical devices. Must be able to complete a satisfactorily pre-employment physical. Must be able to complete a satisfactorily National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI). This is a drug testing designated position. The employee is subject to random testing for drug use.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
