Summary

This position is located at Fitness, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, FL. The purpose of this position is to assist with all aspects of the fitness program to include answering basic fitness related questions and show members how to properly use all equipment, perform basic fitness orientation, identify and correct unsafe fitness techniques, clean and maintain facility equipment, and perform administrative duties as needed.

Duties

General (Duties include but are not limited to):

  • Performs and/or assists in the operation of the recreation activity.
  • The employee will perform basic fitness orientation, identify and correct unsafe fitness techniques, supervise intramural sporting events, clean and maintain facility and equipment, and perform administrative duties as needed.
  • The employee must have the ability to understand basic fitness principles, learned through in-house training.
  • The Fitness Assistant reports to the Fitness Coordinator or Sports Coordinator in most cases.
  • Typical assignments may include: establishing schedules of events; applying rules and regulations in supervising assigned youth participants in indoor and outdoor activities; setting up gymnasiums and playing fields for sports events; scheduling and conducting tours.
  • Demonstrates procedures common to the activities, and instructs in the use of related equipment. Conducts instructional classes in the recreational area.
  • Helps to plan and coordinates details of recreational activities and maintains related supplies. Assists in planning, scheduling and publicizing various activities to attract and motivate participants.
  • May oversee sale of retail items associated with activities. Ensures adherence to safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
  • Must successfully pass the E-verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.

  • A valid State driver's license is required to operate motor vehicles.

  • Must currently reside within 50-mile radius of NAS Jacksonville, FL 32212.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have current CPR/AED and First Aide certification or be willing to obtain within 90 days of employment.

Qualifications

Specialized experience directly related to the duties described above. Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Must have knowledge gained through relevant work experience which enables the incumbent to competently and independently carry out day to day operations as described above.
  • One to two years experience in a related recreational activity. (Qualifications applicable to the specialization may be established locally).
  • Must be a mature individual with an adequate level of physical fitness, sound leadership, effective written and verbal communication skills and interview skills. Considerable tact and diplomacy as well as finesse are required when interacting with staff members and customers.


You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Required:
6 months or more of general experience AND 6 months or more of specialized experience
OR
Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.).
OR
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience as described above.
