Duties

Help

  • Analyzes climatic regimes, geography, terrain, weather system characteristics, centralized weather products, and indigenous surface and upper air reports to forecast weather conditions for takeoff, enroute, and destinations, and air refueling tracks for locations worldwide.
  • Discusses the location, intensity, movement and development potential of weather features.
  • Solves a variety of meteorological problems with other production personnel.
  • Modifies forecasts developed by other activities to provide information on exact conditions expected to be encountered by the aircraft for projected timeframe for the area of operation.
  • Observes weather phenomena, encodes and records the observation following established Air Force instructions and guides using computer-based systems in the weather station.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Work may require occasional travel away from normal duty station.
  • May be required to work rotating shifts, irregular hours, and be subject to recall to support unscheduled weather support requirements at any time.
  • May be require access to classified Secret information. Must be able to acquire a Secret clearance. For positions requiring a security clearance (Secret or Top Secret) the applicant must possess or be able to obtain a clearance within one year of appointment.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:(l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To qualify for the GS-1341-09 level, you must have 1-year equivalent to at least next lower grade level experience, education, or training in applying principles and procedures of various meteorological models and forecasting techniques. Expert in analysis of climatic regimes, geography, terrain features, weather system characteristics, centralized weather products, and indigenous surface and upper-air reports to produce mission-critical forecasts. Experienced in advising aircrews on weather impacts for takeoff, enroute operations, and destination conditions within the Area of Responsibility. Candidate must be proficient in identifying, evaluating, and integrating high-quality data sources to produce meteorological briefs utilizing communications channels and meteorological equipment, ensuring seamless delivery of automated bulletins and live, interactive weather products. Experience executing advanced meteorological analyses to solve forecasting challenges, interpret and adapt standard guidelines to develop mission-specific procedures for special flight operations and base weather stations. Candidate must be willing to participate and innovate in guiding a national level certification process providing instruction on meteorological tools and techniques. Experience observing, encoding, recording, disseminating, and evaluating weather observations such as using Air Force Meteorological systems such as Bifrost and AFWEBS.

Education

If you are using Education to qualify for this position, two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

You must provide transcripts or other documentation to support your Educational claims. To receive credit for Education, you must provide documentation of proof that you meet the Education requirements for this position.
