This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Operates specific dredge equipment required for dredging operations. By observing the dredge's computerized positioning system, closed circuit television, and main dredge pump vacuum and pressure.

This is a Permanent - Seasonal position.

Help
  • Operates specific dredge equipment required for dredging operations.
  • Troubleshoots system and makes necessary adjustments or corrections to bring system back on line so the dredge can continue to work.
  • Monitors the computer screen and the gauges and controls associated with the operation of the dredge pump and winches.
  • Determines when suction head should be cleaned from readings on vacuum gages.
  • Enters information into computer program to determine cut length, alignment and new setups. This requires constant monitoring of the computer screen and the gauges and controls associated with the operation of the dredge pump and winches.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
  • Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
  • Required to observe established safe working procedures; and, wear appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions.
  • A pre-employment physical is required; and additional follow-up physical exams are required every two (2) years.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Dredging Equipment Operator ~ without more than normal supervision. Handling ropes and wire rope, operating barge winches, boat winches and ratchets to fleet river barges, check barge soundings and keep leaking barges and plant from losing freeboard by using pumps (trash and submersible). Utilizing the water pressure from the pipeline discharge to steer the pipeline and maintain the discharge in the designated disposal area. Operating the baffle plate to keep the pipeline clear of hazards such as; traffic, navigational structures such as dikes and the river bank. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
  • Incumbent continually reaches for and manipulates equipment controls simultaneously using hands and feet. The work requires moderate physical effort since the controls are relatively easy to move requiring effort comparable to lifting less than 10 pounds of weight. Incumbent stands for prolonged periods of time, and frequently climbs stairs to the pilot house. The work requires a high degree of muscular and visual coordination.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is performed both inside Pilot House and outside. When working outside, employee is frequently subjected to grease, odors, fumes, smoke, and noise. Most typical hazard us serious burns and injury from broken cables and from working around machinery, burns, and drowning.
