• Perform a variety of immunohematologic tests and examinations which individually and collectively are difficult and complex in the Blood Bank field.
• Recognize and identify unusual results.
• Perform daily quality control on reagents a maintain records of same.
• Receive, issue, prepare, and store blood and blood component in accordance with established procedures and directives.
• Assist team/shift leaders and/or supervisors in maintaining and collecting data from the Blood Bank computer demographic files and in the performance of Quality Assurance audits and assessments.
• Enter test results and pertinent patient demographics into computer database system which requires knowledge of an alphanumeric keyboard and practical knowledge of a computer system.
• Perform preliminary steps for instrument setup, function verification and operation for instrumentation.
• Ensure all blood collection, processing, and testing are in accordance with various regulations and guidelines.
• Receive specimens from donor collections for testing.
• Assist supervisor in the development of standard operations manuals for the Blood Donor Center.
• Monitors inventory of supplies, reagents, and controls allowing sufficient lead-time to obtain additional supplies prior to running out.
• Check unexpected or unusual results, unacceptable control values, etc.

• Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required.
• Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
• Applicants must be able to fulfill non-privileged professional credential requirements.
• This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
• Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.

Basic Requirement for Medical Technician (Blood Banking):

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing testing procedures in a clinical laboratory; maintaining clinical laboratory equipment; and preparing reports and/or documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

Education: One full year (18 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position such as Medical Lab Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

AND

Certification Requirement: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS).
