Duties

Help
  • Plans work in relation to and follows work procedures provided by supervisor with latitude for making minor deviations from normal work methods.
  • Sets pace of work for cooks and shipkeepers, taking into consideration work to be accomplished.
  • Checks work in progress for compliance with instructions and notifies supervisor of any changes in work practice that may lead to a reduction of cost to the operation.
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the galley, messroom and crews quarters and is responsible for sanitary conditions of foods during preparation and cooking.
  • Keeps supervisor informed regarding status of supplies used to perform assignment.
  • Explains and assures compliance with safety, conduct and housekeeping rules and regulations.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must pass food handler's examination by the Public Health Service every six months.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Complete a pre-employment physical and annual physicals thereafter.
  • Must have clinical titer testing or proof of immunity for Hepatitis B and a Tuberculosis (TB) screening.
  • This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
  • Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.
  • During lay-up periods from dredging operations may be utilized and assigned to other essential work in the District, such as repairs and maintenance of plant at Service Base according to individual qualifications and skills.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Cook Leader~ without more than normal supervision. I am skilled in leading a crew of cooks and shipkeepers in cooking, preparing, and serving meals including meats, fish, soups, poultry, vegetables, fruits, salads, breads, cakes and desserts; storing of commodities for 30 to 60 people; ensuring the cleanliness of the galley, messroom and crews quarters; and providing sanitary conditions of foods during preparation and cooking - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Incumbent is required to exert moderate to heavy physical effort when handling galley supplies and materials. Incumbent perform work requiring continual standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 50 pounds with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed primarily in the galley where there is constant exposure to above average temperatures and kitchen areas which are well lighted but are often hot and noisy. Exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and to extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. There is danger of slipping on wet floors that have been recently mopped or where food has been spilled on deck. Subject to possible cuts from knives and burns from steam, hot foods, stoves, and hot grease and water in galley.
