Summary

The position is at the Department of Veterans Affairs at the New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) in the Environmental Management Service providing a wide range of health care services processing laundry. Help

Duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Operating a variety of laundry production equipment, which includes large dryers, small washers and dryers, garment finisher and textile finishing equipment, provides hand "folding and soiled linen sorting as required at the Textile Care Processing Facility (TCPF).
  • Display sound judgment in monitoring the workflow for textile processing tasks through communication with the linen clerk and laundry supervisor to determine and communicate linen needs to the washman in a timely manner.
  • Basic knowledge of the operating principles of commercial washing utilizing formula charts.
  • Ability to operate cart wash, water and air systems.
  • Identify proper operation and procedures to respond to equipment malfunctions.
  • Familiarize with various chemical agents used by the Textile Care Processing Facility (TCPF) to ensure they are properly used to prevent damage to linens, uniforms and any other processed textiles.
  • Incumbent is cross trained in all techniques and procedures used within the Textile Care Processing Facility (TCPF) in the event of staffing shortages or unforeseen workload and works under strict timeframes and deadlines due to patient workload.
  • Incumbent will be a back-up to the Washman, Laundry Worker, Sewing Machine Operator, Linen Clerks and Truck Driver as necessary. (Valid driver's license required if operating vehicle.)
  • Incumbent unloads washed linen items from washer-extractor machines and transports washed linens either to the flatwork ironer in carts or to the driers using a hoist and overhead monorail system.
  • Loads and unloads driers utilizing overhead monorail and carts. Set temperatures, drying times, cool-down time, reverse non-reverse switch, and normal/permanent press switch on driers.
  • Transport dried items to finishing area using carts.
  • Cleans drier equipment and work area daily performing tasks such as emptying lint collectors, sweeping, and dusting with compressed air.
  • Performs other laundry worker tasks when washer extractor and driers do not need attention. Such tasks include feeding flatwork linen to the ironer, hand folding linen, operation of the small piece folder, or sorting soiled linen.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Varied daytime shifts ending no later than 4pm. Subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:
Dexterity and Safety, Follow Directions, Interpret Instructions, Specifications (other than blueprint reading), Operation of Equipment/Machinery, and Technical Practices

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Continuous standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, heavy pulling, and heavy lifting is required to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position. Very heavy physical effort is required to pull wet, tangled linen out of the washer extractors for processing in the flatwork or drying mats. Incumbent will be required to do heavy tasks for long periods which will require walking, standing, lifting, pulling, and pushing heavy loads to satisfactorily accomplish his/her duties. Is subject to exposure to lint and dust, and to extremes of heat, humidity, and noise generated by equipment.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
