Duties

Help
  • You will determine the separation and sequence to be used between aircraft and provide flight assistance.
  • You will formulate and issue clearances, control instructions, and advisory information to accomplish separation between aircraft and between vehicles and aircraft.
  • You will coordinate with other positions and other ATC facilities and notify cognizant Search and Rescue (AR) agencies of aircraft in distress.
  • You will assign personnel to operating positions according to individual qualification and training requirements and assign trainees to individual operating positions and recommend certification.
  • You will maintain operational continuity of the watch; brief the tower control watch or radar watch on weather conditions, traffic, equipment status, field conditions, and special operations prior to their assuming the watch.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Air traffic control specialists must possess the facility ratings required at the facility where the position is located. You will be required to maintain a valid Air Traffic Control Specialist and/or Control Tower Operator Certificate.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • Occasional travel or Temporary Additional Duty (TAD) to other ATC facilities for the purpose of liaison, classes, or other duties up to 5% may be required.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to pass an annual ATC flight physical examination, DoD Class III Flight Physical, to meet the medical standards for ATC duties as specified by the OPM qualification standard for GS-2152.
  • A valid Control Tower Operators License or FAA Credential with a tower rating is required.

Qualifications

GS-11

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Providing technical expertise in Air Traffic Control functions to include; Tower or Radar watch, flight assistance to aircraft, coordinate and direct control to aircraft, formulate and issue clearance, operate and monitor various air traffic control equipment (e.g. radar, lighting, visual aids) AND assign individual qualifications and training requirements to personnel.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Providing assistance in Air Traffic Control functions to include; Tower or Radar watch, flight assistance to aircraft, coordinate and direct control to aircraft, formulate and issue clearance, operate and monitor various air traffic control equipment (e.g. radar, lighting, visual aids).

-Maximum Entry Age (MEA): The MEA for Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) is 36. An employee originally hired into a covered ATC position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 36. Maximum Reentry Age: An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age.
