Chief, Hospital Medicine Duties

The Chief Hospitalist duties involve administration and patient care on both non-teaching and teaching services, in addition to leading and/or supporting a range of facility performance measures to optimize employee engagement, patient experience, and patient outcomes. The Chief Hospitalist is under direct Supervision of the Associate Chief of Staff of Medicine. The duties include but not limited to:

  • Serves as Chief of Hospital Medicine for VA Augusta Healthcare System, providing leadership and guidance to assigned clinical and administrative staff, complying with Medical Center policies and the Medical Staff bylaws.
  • Provides oversight to the hospital medicine operations including the post-discharge clinic.
  • Provides oversight to ensure hospitalists' mandatory training, credentialing, chart reviews, and mandates are completed promptly.
  • Conduct the Hospital Medicine Interdisciplinary Discharge Team (IDT) meetings daily as directed by the direct supervisor.
  • Provides direct patient care in inpatient and post-discharge clinic (outpatient) settings while adhering to Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
  • Ensures hospitalists complete all medical records (including discharge summaries) in accordance with the Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
  • Observe patient responses, testing procedures, equipment use, and review patient records.
  • Provide oversight to the Medical students and residents in line with our academic mission.
  • Completes tasks and duties as assigned by direct supervisor and/or supervisory alignment
  • Participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
  • Attends Medical Staff meetings and serves on Medical Staff committees, as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements are outlined below.
Preferred Experience:
  • Five (5) or more years working in Acute Medicine. VHA Leadership experience

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), light lifting (under 15 pounds), moderate carrying (15-44 pounds), light carrying (under 15 pounds), pushing 4 hours, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking 2 hours, standing 8 hours, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), mental and emotional stability.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6, or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
