Duties

Help
  • Performs a variety of tasks involved in packing and repacking non-hazardous and/or hazardous materials and items. Selects proper container and methods of packing, cushioning and follows specialized packing procedures.
  • Examines any prepackaged items to determine whether any repacking or over-packing is required, consolidates shipments; and applies certification, identification and shipping data.
  • Applies a wide variety of packing methods and techniques including blocking and bracing based on the search and application of regulations covering the packing and transporting of hazardous materials.
  • May pack, preserve, or re-pack material or items where techniques and procedures are standard and/or require little deviation from established methods.
  • May perform receiving, storing, shipment, and distribution of a variety of bin supplies, materials, equipment, and commodities using material handling equipment to include fork lift, stock selectors, etc.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:

  • Ability to do the work of a Packer without more than normal supervision (SOE): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as applying markings, labels and certifications in accordance with written guidance and selecting appropriate materials for packing.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort
Work is performed in building with concrete floors. There is standing, bending, stooping and walking involved. Frequently lifts weights up to 40 pounds. Receives assistance from others or uses electric hoist when lifting heavier items.

Working Conditions
Work is performed inside warehouse that is lighted, heated and ventilated. There is exposure to cold drafts when doors are open. The work is dusty, dirty and greasy. There is possibility of cuts, scrapes and bruises. Wears such protective equipment as safety shoes, glasses, aprons and gloves.
