Summary

This position works as a laborer in the grounds section of Facilities Management Service at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, MI. The incumbent cleans and empties trash cans in the parking structures, smoking shelters and grounds, cleans and washes lawn equipment, snow removal equipment and government vehicles. Incumbent will also trim bushes, rake leaves, cut and trim grass using powered push lawn mowers and powered edgers and shovels snow with shovels or powered blowers.

Help

The duties of the laborer include, but are not limited to:

  • Use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, hedge or bush trimmers, or axes
  • Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, or pruners
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls
  • Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and spread salt in those areas
  • Shovel snow from walks, driveways, or parking lots, and spread salt in those areas
  • Maintain tools and equipment
  • Mow or edge lawns using power mowers or edgers
  • Trim or pick flowers and clean flower beds
  • Gather and remove litter
  • Install rock gardens, ponds, decks, drainage systems, irrigation systems, retaining walls, fences, or planters

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 2:30pm; may be subject to off-duty or emergency call-ins due to needs of the service

Physical Requirements: Positions requires moderately heavy physical effort in doing tasks as occasionally lifting 45 pounds and over. Moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds. Reaching above shoulder. Walking 8 hours, standing 8 hours, crawling 1 hour, kneeling 2 hours, repeated bending 2 hours. Must be able to work outside and inside. Must be able to deal with excessive noise. Must be able to work around machinery and moving parts. Wil be working around moving objects or vehicles. Will be working closely with others and must be able to work alone. Work is performed inside and outside. Work outside is in all kinds of weather. The equipment used frequently involves special care to prevent injuries.

It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.

The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
