Duties

Help

As a Visual Information Specialist, GS-1084-9/11, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

  • Plan the design, layout, and execution of all visual efforts in connection with the presentation of information, using visual techniques and procedures requiring original design development in a variety of publications, reports, and other printed matter.
  • Designs manuals, pamphlets, administrative publications, booklets, exhibits, bulletins, flyers, posters, forms, charts, directories, and other media for the presentation of information.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance to project leaders through coordination of all aspects of projects including obtaining necessary graphics, photography and approvals.
  • Serve as the design expert for web-based communication projects and coordinate the design and production with clients.
  • Design pages so that material is effectively presented, content is enhanced, readability is improved, and the publication is produced at minimum cost.
  • Prepare design for printing to be contracted through the Government Printing Office (GPO).
  • Review proofs to insure compliance with specifications and assumes responsibility for design quality and technical accuracy.
  • Prepare reports describing any necessary corrections to requests.
  • Coordinate unacceptable contract work for return, correction, or credit.
  • Provide technical advice and direction to staff members involved in producing electronic files for printing.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must meet the qualification requirements outlined below to be considered minimally qualified for this position. The qualification requirements are in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standards. ALL QUALIFICATIONS MUST BE MET BY THE CLOSING DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a degree in a Major Field of Study such as Commercial Art, Fine Arts, Art History, Industrial Design, Architecture, Drafting, Interior Design, Photography, Visual Communication or other related fields.

AND

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

You may qualify at the GS-09 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector that demonstrates your ability to 1) Apply artistic and conceptual principles to visually translate concepts to audiences of diverse interests and backgrounds. 2) Utilize visual arts methods, principles, techniques, and materials, to translate the information into visual designs 3) Analyze the information objectives of a project and translate the subject matter into visual designs that effectively communicate objectives. OR

B. A master's or equivalent graduate degree in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university; or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or possession of a LL.B. or J.D degree, if related. Graduate level education must demonstrate the competencies necessary to do the work of the position, examples of qualifying fields include Commercial Art, Fine Arts, Art History, Industrial Design, Architecture, Drafting, Interior Design, Photography, Visual Communication or other related fields; OR

C. A combination of education and experience as listed above.

You may qualify at the GS-11 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector that demonstrates your ability to 1) Apply artistic and conceptual principles to visually translate concepts to audiences of diverse interests and backgrounds. 2) Utilize visual arts methods, principles, techniques, and materials, to translate the information into visual designs 3) Analyze the information objectives of a project and translate the subject matter into visual designs that effectively communicate objectives 4) Understand the differences between web-based and print-based design as well as the complexities and limitations of each medium. OR

B. A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; or possession of a LL.M. degree, if related. Graduate level education must demonstrate the competencies necessary to do the work of the position, examples of qualifying fields include Commercial Art, Fine Arts, Art History, Industrial Design, Architecture, Drafting, Interior Design, Photography, Visual Communication or other related fields. OR

C. A combination of education and experience as listed above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
