Summary

This position is located in the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service at VA San Diego Healthcare System, leading the Kearny Mesa Outpatient clinic. Lead audiologists provide comprehensive clinical services, coordinate special projects, as well as oversee the day-to-day core clinic operations. These ensure the work assignments of the clinical team are completed and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assures timely accomplishment of assigned workload; assess the status, quality, and progress of work, making day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities
  • Obtains assistance from managers on problems that may arise in unusual situations but otherwise independent
  • Oversees the professional practice of peers
  • Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice
  • Ability to articulate and communicate assignments, projects, problems to be solved, actionable events, and objectives, as well as advise on work methods, practices, and procedures
  • Ability to coach the clinical team in the selection and application of appropriate problem solving methods and techniques
  • Shows potential to monitor and report on status and progress of work, evaluate program quality to ensure that methods, deadlines and quality have been met; and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities
  • Serves as facilitator and/or negotiator in coordinating initiatives to include active pm1icipation in performance improvement projects and consensus building activities among clinical team members with wide divergent backgrounds, interest, and points of view.
  • Serves as program lead for the highly specialized Hearing Conservation program. Clinical duties and responsibilities of this position include:
    • a.Uses advanced knowledge in a focused area of contemporary audiology such a sperforming and interpreting noise surveys throughout the medical center and associated sites where VAMC employees perform their job duties; collaborating with VHA Employee Health and Safety departments regarding administrative and OSHA-mandated requirements of the program; oversees training, data collection and monitoring of employee initial, annual and separation audiograms within legal requirements of the Hearing Conservation Program; applying knowledge of embryology, genetics pharmacology, ethics, compliance and biostatistics, anatomy, physiology, acoustics, applied acoustics, and auditory/vestibular pathophysiology.
    • b.Demonstrates the ability to articulate and communicate goals, objectives, and focused initiatives to an inter-disciplinary team, specialized clinical program of Hearing Conservation program, as well as guiding the team members on workmethods, practices and procedures;
    • c.Monitor and evaluate the work of an inter-disciplinary team, with particular oversight with Hearing conservation specialized clinical program, and to make adjustments in procedures or practices to accomplish the program goals; and
    • d.Possesses the ability to serve as coach and facilitator in coordinating program or team initiatives and consensus building activities among clinical team members with widely divergent backgrounds, interests, and points of view.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education.
    • (1) Doctor of Audiology (AUD) from an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) or Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). HR office staff and management officials may verify a program's accreditation from ACAE at acaeaccred.org and CAA at caa.asha.org. OR
    • (2) Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Licensure.
    • Individuals must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
    • Loss of Credential. Management officials, in collaboration with HR Office staff must immediately relieve employees who fail to maintain the required licensure of the duties and responsibilities associated with this occupation which may also result in separation from employment.
  • English Language Proficiency.
    • Audiologist candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f)
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:
  • Experience
    • At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level.
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
    • Ability to lead a clinical team on work methods, practices, and procedures.
    • Ability to coordinate assignments, special projects, and objectives to lead work.
    • Ability to monitor work, evaluate programs, and adjust to accomplish the workload.
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience articulating, communicating and leading projects and performance improvement workgroups -Experience overseeing quality assurance program.
