Duties

Help
  • You will serve as a team leader for those activities requiring expertise in highly complex and sensitive surveys in high hazard workplaces.
  • You will perform duties encompassing all phases of the industrial hygiene program as specified by Department of Defense (DoD).
  • You will research literature for available information and present findings with recommendations or alternatives.
  • You will evaluate new work processes used at the activity for which information on hazards is lacking and precedents for the control of hazards are only partially applicable.
  • You will exercise resourcefulness in planning and developing individualized methods and approaches to obtain a valid and complete evaluation.
  • You will adapt and modify established methods of control to meet requirements.
  • You will furnish technical advice to managers, supervisors, employees and other specialists concerning operations which directly affect worker safety and health.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

For the GS- 12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs
  • Investigating health problems to determine probable cause and recommend measures to minimize health hazards
  • Devising control measures, including ventilation, shielding, material substitution, change in work procedures, isolation, education and personal protective devices
  • Planning and carrying out industrial hygiene inspections and surveys.
For the GS- 11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs
  • Analyzing and evaluating occupational health hazards to include those for which the nature and extent of hazards is not completely understood
  • Assisting in devising control measures for ventilation, shielding, material, substitution, and change in work procedures
  • Drafting industrial hygiene policy and guidance for occupational health and safety professionals

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science
OR
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene
OR In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

GS-11
  • 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree
OR
  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
  • A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. My percentage of the required education plus my percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.
