Duties

Help
  • You will monitor a patient's baseline vital signs (e.g., temperature, blood pressure, pulse) during a medical emergency.
  • You will perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or automatic external defibrillation (AED) during respiratory and cardiac emergencies.
  • You will respond to a scene of an emergency, and follow courses of action, as assigned.
  • You will perform firefighting duties as a crew member on structural, aircraft, vehicle, wildland fire, hazardous materials incidents, transportation incidents, ordnance responses and nuclear/radiation emergencies.
  • You will analyze the environment (e.g., relationship between fuels, topography, wind, humidity) in the fire environment to ensure use of the correct firefighting apparatus.
  • You will drive a firefighting vehicle (e.g., pumper, aerial ladder truck, rescue truck, brush truck, quick-attack vehicle) to the scene of a fire.
  • You will establish on-scene control procedures (e.g., zone control, decontamination) in a hazardous material incident.

  • This is a Bargaining Unit position.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination. Required to take annual firefighter physicals via the Occupational Health Dept following National Fire Protection Association Standards (NFPA) 1582 standards.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • Must possess a valid State of California EMT certification or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician EMT certification prior to employment and possession of a valid County of San Diego accreditation within 90 days of employment.
  • Must possess a Valid State Driver's license and must be able to obtain a valid State of California Department of Motor Vehicles Firefighter Endorsement within 90 days of employment.
  • Must possess the following firefighter certifications under DoD/IFSAC, CSTI, NPQS, NWCG or FEMA: Firefighter I and II, Hazmat Awareness, operations and Technician, Driver Operator Pumper, Aerial and Mobile Water Supply.
  • Must possess the following firefighter certifications under DoD/IFSAC, CSTI, NPQS, NWCG or FEMA: Intro to Incident Command System (IS-100), Basic ICS (IS-200), National Incident Mgmt Systems (IS-700), National Response Framework (IS-800)
  • Must complete the following training within 12 months of new appointments: Firefighter Training (S-130), Human Factors on the Fireline (L-180), Portable Pumps and Water Use (S-211), Wildland Fire Chainsaws (S-212)
  • Must complete Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190) (within 12 months of new appointment).
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 100 pounds.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Performing firefighting duties as a crew member on structural, aircraft, vehicle, wildland fires, hazardous materials incidents, transportation accidents, ordnance responses and nuclear/radiation emergencies; operating fire apparatus vehicles (e.g., pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, rescue trucks, brush trucks, quick-attack vehicles ad aircraft firefighting/rescue apparatus, etc.); AND performing Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) services such as on scene care of victim(s) of fire, stricken with sudden illness, accidental or other types of injuries.
