This Physician Assistant will be a Mid-level provider for the Hem/Onc Section under the Medical Service Line. The physician assistant will provide clinical support to the supervisory physicians of Hem/Onc section, and their duties and responsibilities will be at the direction of the supervisory physicians as well as Chief of the Department following transition period. This PA must be fully qualified to provide a full range of patient care services in the Hem/Onc Section. The PA will function in both a clinical and administrative role, and in accordance with the guidelines and policies of the DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

MAJOR DUTIES:
Clinical:

  • Independently manages their assigned Hematology Oncology patients with acute and chronic health conditions, provide emergent, urgent and non-urgent care supporting Hem/Onc clinics after completing transition period and approved by the Chief of the Department.
  • Develops and implements an individualized plan to achieve optimal Hematology/Oncological disease management.
  • Demonstrates leadership and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies.
  • Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
  • Prescribes chemotherapy after successful completion of required training and area specific orientation.
  • Monitor and manage treatment side effects, toxicities and complications from chemotherapy, biological agents, immunology, targeted therapies sand other interventions.
  • Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services.
  • Provides education to patients and their families about specific diagnoses, treatment and able to sign consent form.
  • Develops Survivorship plans for patients and follows those patients.
  • Serve as a resource for staff, nurses, patients and family by providing education on specific topics.
  • Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

  • Participates in hematology/oncology research.
  • Assists with mentoring physician assistant's students, nurses of rotating in the hem/onc Section.
Administrative:
  • Coordinates referrals and evaluation of veterans at the DC Veteran Affairs Medical Center in addition to outside VA's and private sector referrals of Veterans for evaluation and management.
  • Facilitates response/actions to patient inquires for care and treatment provided by the Section.
  • Other administrative duties as needed.
Educational:
  • Attends educational activities to maintain certification needs. Completes all TMS training in a timely manner.
  • Participates in educational activities in the Hem/Onc Section and the Medical Service to ensure updated knowledge of the subject.
  • Makes use of other educational materials on an as needed basis.
  • Achieve chemotherapy certification (ONS and Biotherapy certification) at the end of 1000 clinical hours.
  • Completion of ASCO APP program within 3 years.

Research:
  • Appreciates the need for research activities as complementary and useful aspects of patient care.
  • Becomes familiar with requirements for submission of research protocols and assists Administrative Assistant and others in the preparation of documents.
  • Participates in the care of patients enrolled in research and documents those activities as required, on a timely basis.

Physician Assistant Basic Requirements

  • Citizenship. Citizen of the United States [in accordance with section 7402(c) to title 38,United States Code (U.S.C.). Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7407(a).]
  • Education. Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant.
  • Certification. Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam).
  • Licensure. Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).

Preferred Experience: Experience in Hematology or Oncology is preferred..

Grade Determinations: Physician Assistant-III Experience and Education. PAs at the PA-III grade are at the full performance level and lead and organize patient care independently, practice within multi- disciplinary teams, and coordinate all aspects of patient care across the health care system. They utilize advanced clinical knowledge and judgment in decision-making and evaluating outcomes. They function as experts in clinical practice and/or in areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities, may serve as mentors for transitioning PAs, and may provide training for health care students. Individuals can demonstrate the KSAs for the full performance level by:
  • Three years of successful practice as a PA preferably with experience in either hematology and/or oncology.
OR
  • Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program sponsored by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations or other postgraduate residency programs accredited by VA, ARC-PA, U.S. Armed Forces, or another accrediting agency and one year of professional practice as a PA.
OR
  • A doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and one year of professional practice as a PA.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. PAs at this level are not required to meet each individual KSA listed below to qualify, but should be able to demonstrate, develop, or acquire those not met upon appointment for PA-III:
  • Ability to clinically evaluate facility patient care delivery systems and validate or identify barriers to safe and effective patient care.
  • Skill to consistently demonstrate an elevated level of expertise and autonomy in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients through facility Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE).
  • Ability to present clinical findings and recommendations to appropriate management officials.
  • Ability to clinically facilitate the delivery of patient care in collaboration with health professionals, health managers, and other health care personnel.
  • Ability to implement and initiate clinical changes to established treatment protocols based upon new medical literature research findings to enhance patient delivery care for improved patient outcomes.
  • Ability to participate clinically in the development of the PA patient care audit processes involving in-depth review and analysis of medical records.

Physical Requirements: The work requires on a regular and recurring basis visual acuity, manual dexterity, clear speech, and ability to walk and stand for periods of time in the clinical setting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements as a condition of employment.
