Summary

About the Position: Performs quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Ensures all required documentation is present and appropriate. Analyzes and interprets documentation in record, ensuring accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data and corresponds with provider and clinical team members for correction/completion. Hours of work are 0730 to 1600.

Duties

Help
  • Assigns specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Performs quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures all required documentation is present and appropriate.
  • Performs research and coordination to correct inconsistencies or discrepancies in the documentation.
  • Gathers and compiles various data and produces reports as needed.
  • Performs limited utilization review of inpatient records to assure that the diagnosis responsible for the length of stay is appropriately identified and the secondary diagnoses are sequenced properly to assure maximum allocation under the DRG system.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which include, 1) Translating primary/secondary diagnoses, to reflect patient's diagnosis and procedure performed; 2) Utilizing medical knowledge to facilitate accurate and complete coding of diagnosis, procedures, and operations;AND 3) Utilizing hospital automated application/systems, (i.e. MHS GENESIS-Electronic Health Record, or equivalent automated patient record system to retrieve various reports) to process complete patient medical record.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education: Generally, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position, i.e. Successful completion of college education in Medical Coding, or have earned a Medical Coding certificate, such as Certified Professional Coder (CPC). (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts and/or Certificate).

Medical Coding Certification is highly desired.
