Summary

This position performs a higher level, scope, complexity and variety of dental assisting duties representing the clinical assignment and applies advance clinical skills. The Clinical Expanded Function Dental Assistant performs a full range of duties for routine patient care with indirect supervision from the lead or supervisory dental assistant or the treating dentist. Certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) is required.

Help

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs mouth mirror inspection of the oral cavity
  • Gathers diagnostic information
  • Performs pulp vitality testing
  • Charts existing restorations and conditions
  • Selects shades for fixed and removable prostheses
  • Places and remove rubber dams and matrix bands
  • Places and removes retraction cord
  • Places and removes intracoronal temporary restorations
  • Removes temporary crown /bridge and clean tooth preparation from debris
  • Fabricates, adjusts and cements temporary crown
  • Removes permanent cement from supragingival surfaces
  • Removes sutures
  • Places and Removes surgical dresses
  • Monitors nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesic
  • Performs Coronal polishing of teeth
  • Removes hard accretions from and polishes removable prostheses
  • Sets up operatory and /or surgery suite for planned dental procedure and cleans dental unit for timely turnover
  • Passes instruments safely, accurately and efficiently
  • Keeps operative field clear of debris and retracts oral tissue effectively and comfortably
  • Prepares dental materials per manufactures instructions
  • Accomplishes all intra-operative procedures within standard infection control protocols
  • Assists in routine general dental procedures using concepts of four handed dentistry
  • Assists in specialized dental procedures, such as oral surgery, Endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, implant placement restorations
  • Assists Dentist in charting findings and treatment plan in patients records
  • Exposes both standard and specialty dental imaging( i.e. TMJ, ceph, cone bean)
  • Utilizes dental Imaging safety techniques minimize retakes
  • Accomplishes Imaging requests within the desire time frame
  • Demonstrates proper infection control procedures in setting up and cleaning operatories
  • Properly prepares instruments for transfer to SPS for sterilization
  • Monitors patient condition during treatment, being alert for signs of physical distress
  • Pours impressions and prepares study models
  • Makes final dentures impression trays and prepares bite rims
  • Performs other Dental Laboratory functions as time and skill levels allow
  • Monitors patient vital sign (BP, pulse oximeter) and condition during invasive treatment and during recovery period following procedure
  • Makes impressions for diagnostic cast and preliminary impression for prosthetic fabrication
  • Provides post-operative and other appropriate patient education

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.
  • Certification: Certification by the Dental Assistant National Board is required for all positions above the full performance level.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Grade Determination:

GS-7 Dental Assistant

At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level or equivalent that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Ability to perform dental assisting expanded functions
(b) Comprehensive working knowledge of advanced imaging techniques in order to provide instruction (e.g. cone beam, cephalometric, advanced panoramic imaging, TMJ, etc)

DANB Certification is required.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7.

Preferred Experience: Must have DANB CDA Certification
