Duties

Help
  • You will analyze the environment (e.g., relationship between fuels, topography wind, humidity) in the fire environment to ensure use of the correct firefighting apparatus.
  • You will control and extinguish a fire during firefighting operations.
  • You will establish initial on-scene control during hazardous materials incidents.
  • You will administer medications and solutions orally or intravenously under the direction of standing orders or of an off-site physician.
  • You will interpret an electrocardiogram (EKG) for a patient with an unstable heartbeat to determine future medical treatment.
  • You will provide invasive airway procedures (e.g., needle or surgical cricothyrotomy, pleural decompression, endotracheal intubation, nasal intubation).
  • You will enter confined spaces to perform patient care, rescue and recovery.
  • You will extract a trapped patient to prevent further harm during removal.
  • You will maintain proficiency in search and rescue techniques (e.g., auto extraction, high or low angle rescue, confined space rescue, building collapse).

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision

Qualifications

GS-09: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) providing fire prevention, fire protection and emergency operations; 2) performing emergency medical service at the paramedic level; 3) performing hazardous materials responses; 4) performing airfield fire control, disaster response/control and recovery; and 5) driving and operating an ambulance.

***Certification Requirements for GS-09: Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedic certification (NREMT-P); Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter issued by DoD, ProBoard, or IFSAC. Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted upon selection to verify eligibility***

GS-08: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) providing pre-hospital emergency medical services care at the paramedic level to injured and/or ill patients; 2) maintaining appropriate reports, forms and documents utilizing medical charting and medical terminology; and 3) driving and operating an ambulance.

NOTE: *** Entry-level parenthetical medical firefighters (Paramedic) levels must successfully complete any and all required training, to include being DoD certified at the Firefighter I and II levels and Airport Firefighter level, if applicable within a maximum of 24 months. Entry-level parenthetical medical firefighters (Paramedic) who fall into this category are one grade less than the target GS grade.**

Normal work schedule 72 hrs weekly/ 144 Biweekly

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
