Conduct comprehensive industrial hygiene and environmental health surveys of complex, high hazard work environments containing diverse occupational exposures.
Coordinate, identify, and has overall responsibility for the conduct of inspections of complex, high hazard work areas.
Anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and recommend methods to control or eliminate occupational and environmental health hazards or exposures.
Evaluate monitoring data obtained by subordinate personnel to determine if the results obtained are accurate and acceptable.
Ensure appropriate samples are taken where ceiling or short-term limits have been established and determines where to take longer samples on a subsequent visit.
Conduct special studies, surveys, and assistance visits for DOD organizations on a variety of industrial hygiene issues.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Qualification Requirement for Industrial Hygienist:
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
OR
Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting on-site industrial hygiene and environmental health surveys, generating reports of occupational and environmental health hazards or exposures found, and submitting samples to appropriate laboratories for analysis.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
