Duties

Help
  • Conducts both internal and external patrols of the hospital, parking lots/garages, and grounds.
  • Ensures the safety and security of all staff, patients, visitors, and government owned property.
  • Prepares written reports on all incidents and investigations as required.
  • Conducts periodic parcel, package, container, and equipment checks following prescribed special procedures.
  • Monitors personnel access via both personal sight and electronic access control systems into restricted areas.
  • Handles initial inquiries for both administrative and potential criminal complaints.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid stateside driver's license.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Those notable to obtain or maintain this standard must be immediately removed from all security duties involving the handling, carrying, or transferring of firearms.
  • This position requires the incumbent to qualify semi-annually with a 9mm Semi-Automatic pistol and be proficient in any other required firearms, scanner metal detector, and oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray/foam.
  • Firearms testing and successful qualification to service component published standards required on a semi-annual basis. This may include firing at night, with one hand, or while under time or physical stress.
  • This position may require incumbent to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment and a uniform. Incumbent must not have any medical condition that precludes the wearing of a chemical protective mask and over garments.
  • This position has the following medical requirements; good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.
  • This position is under the Federal Motor Operations medical requirement specified in 5 Code of Federal Regulations Section 930 Part 109; persons operating a Government owned or leased vehicle are subject to medical testing once every 4 years.
  • This position may require a character investigation to secure incumbent’s honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements. Incumbent will be required to regularly work 8-hour shifts.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete security guard training.
  • Employee must be trained and maintain current required certifications in CPR and first aid. May act as a first responder in a medical emergency.
  • Incumbent is required to maintain physical conditioning and pass a annual Physical Agility Test (PAT).
  • The incumbent is required to maintain a high standard of conduct; and will be assessed under the Individual Reliability Program to show they can work effectively under pressure or emergency conditions with a positive attitude toward his/her duties.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working in a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; maintaining order by patrolling perimeters; protecting life; writing and reviewing incident reports; and responding to emergency situations and security breaches. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

    • Incumbent must be able to act in the capacity of a first responder to critical incidents, including but not limited to: criminal acts, natural disasters, lost or missing persons, mass casualties, and/or acts of terror or mass destruction. This will include active participation in training and exercises designed to determine the readiness of responding forces or the effectiveness of protective measures and programs.
    • Position requires employee to perform routine and emergency daily duties while wearing a uniform and/or protective clothing to include facial/ head worn protective masks (SAPR, SCBA, etc.) soft body armor where assigned, and duty belt with police equipment weighing several pounds.
