Help

  • Completes preliminary examinations on new dental service patients, review's patient's medical and dental history. Examines the teeth and periodontium for evidence of plaque and periodontal disease.
  • Inspect the mouth and throat for evidence of disease such as oral cancer; takes, develops and interprets routine x-rays to identify tooth structures, calculus, and abnormalities such as cavities, or traumatic occlusion.
  • Prepares treatment plans including assessment of the problem, type of oral hygiene care required, nutrition assessment and counseling, restorative and rehabilitative care.
  • Responsible for the daily operations and management Dental Program. Reviews and Establishes policies and procedures for the operation of the department.
  • Assign work to employees in an efficient, equitable and selective manner to achieve satisfactory quantity and quality of work output. Provides instructions, explanations, and training in tasks and job techniques.
  • Identifies and utilizes resources and materials for continuing education. Arranges for supplemental training for specific deficiencies in the performance.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.

Experience: In addition to meeting the above education and licensure requirements, applicants must have one or more full years of experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing professional dentistry work for GS-12 level and above assignments.

Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position.

Some dentists specialize in an area, such as, but not limited to, the following: Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Dental Public Health

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-13: In addition to the above Basic Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) level, applicants must complete a 3-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science; or equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, and/or training.

SUPERVISORY OR MANAGERIAL COMPETENCIES: Candidates must have demonstrated in their work experience of training that they possess or have the potential to develop the following: Accountability, Customer Service, Decisiveness, Flexibility, Integrity/Honesty, Interpersonal skills, Oral Communication, Problem Solving, Resilience, Written Communication audience.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
