Summary

Selection will be assigned to the Plant Operations Unit, Electrical Shop, Facilities Management Service at the Miami VA Healthcare System. You will perform a variety of duties as an electrician including secondary responsibilities in general mechanics for door maintenance and repair; installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, electro-magnetic, electronics, and the installation, maintenance and repairs of door electrical, hydraulics, and pneumatics systems.

Help

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Troubleshoot overhead and underground cable systems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, electrolysis damages, capacitance imbalance, or cable breaks.
  • Plan the sequence of work and determine the nature of maintenance or repair needed.
  • Maintain facilities of the physical plant and its associated equipment, which include removal, maintenance, installation, and repair of medical equipment.
  • Work on High Voltage which is determined by the National Electric Code Book as 600V and above.
  • Use all tools and equipment of the electrical trade, working from schematics, diagrams, drawings.
  • Install, modify, test, repair, troubleshoot, and maintain transformers, converters, regulators, cables, switches, circuit breakers, mechanical, electronic recording instruments, mechanical and electronic control systems.
  • Modify and make adjustment to motors, switching relays, electronic controls, computerized relays as well as a variety of electrical cleaning equipment.
  • Perform routine installation, maintenance, and repair duties.
  • Use and maintain various hand power tools of the trade; may operate aerial trucks and associated equipment.
  • Conduct a wide range of tests of a variety of circuits and equipment, detecting faults, such as electrical grounds and short circuits in the system.
  • Assemble and repair generators and rotary converters and constructs and install rigid conduits.
  • Perform installation of electrical circuits including all types of circuit breakers, receptacles, switches, fluorescent lighting, and other electrical components.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Youmust be able to walk, crawl, reach, stoop, climb, lift up to 60 pounds, and have good bilateral vision and hearing. May frequently be exposed to the hazards of electrical shock, traumatic injury from steam, gas inhalation of fumes and vapors, tripping, falling, cuts, bruises, abrasions, and a variety of diseases. Must observe all safety practices, practice good housekeeping and personal hygiene to offset these conditions. May be required and shall be expected to work overtime. This position requires emergency response to situations involving life, safety, health and may require non-scheduled emergency response anytime day, night or weekend. Must be able to work off of ladders, scaffolds, stages, and in manholes, trenches, crawl spaces, etc.

Working Conditions: Work may be indoors or outdoors in climate weather. Must be able to identify colors and makings as established by the American Standard Association for identification of color-coded electrical wires and lines, and electrical components, as well as other piping systems.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
