Help

As a Physical Scientist you will perform a full range of difficult physical, chemical, and forensic analyses on evidentiary items seized and/or submitted to the regional and/or field laboratory. You will be a delegated authority to serve as an expert in forensic examinations and are given a wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgement.

This position starts at a salary of $105,383.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $137,000.00 (GS-13, Step 10).

Salary listed reflects the rest of U.S. scale and, if applicable, will be adjusted to meet the locality pay or cost of living expenses of the duty location upon selection.

While serving as a Physical Scientist (Forensic), your duties will include:

  • Responsible for the management and examination of highly complex forensic analyses of friction ridges by utilizing a full range of scientific methodologies and forensic techniques in support of the CBP mission to protect the American people, safeguard our borders, and enhance the nation's economic prosperity.
  • Initiates, performs, and oversees examinations of a wide-variety of materials using forensic science techniques involving advanced mathematics, chemistry, mechanics, physics, thermodynamics, weights and measures, friction ridge examinations, computer science, physical properties and sciences, and practices sufficient to perform a full range of duties involved in investigative analyses of evidence and/or crime scenes.
  • Coordinates the development of programs, policies, and procedures to ensure laboratory procedures, forensic examinations, and evidence handling procedures are current and are within the scope of the relevant scientific communities.
  • Designs and conducts innovative and advanced scientific research for the purpose of discovering new forensic techniques and validation methods and resolving complex forensic examination problems.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement: You must provide supporting documentation in your application to show you meet the basic requirement below.

Degree: Physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR

Combination of education and experience: Education equivalent to one of the majors listed above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Conducting analysis, comparison, and evaluation phases of friction ridge examination and serving as a consultant to leadership and other scientists and program specialists;
  • Gathering, processing, and analyzing scientific and technical data and summarizing for strategic and operational decision-making;
  • Planning, and organizing projects, programs, and initiatives, coordinating with staff and management, and;
  • Communicating conclusions, alternatives, and recommendations on national policies, programs, and studies.

You must:
  • Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and
  • Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 04/30/2025.

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP.   • Professional knowledge of physical science sufficient to serve as a subject matter expert in the principles and methodologies of forensic science and applying the skills; accordingly, to apply and evaluate new developments to unprecedented issues; to conduct innovative work of wide scope, difficulty, and complexity in unchartered areas of forensic science; to provide technical and scientific advice to other Headquarters and field off ices and other agencies.
  • Ability to research, test, and evaluate equipment and systems and extend and adapt them to resolve highly complex, critical, or obscure forensic issues or problems.
  • Comprehensive and practical knowledge of CBP and government-wide operational administrative procedures, policies, laws, and regulations as well as a thorough knowledge of the principles of general administration of technically oriented procedures, policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge in conducting technical training for other forensic experts or law enforcement officers, including the preparation of class presentations and training materials.
