Duties

Help

Performs spot instructions of building and structure to determine the nature and extent of repairs required. Such inspections involve the carpentry plumbing, and painting trades. Determines whether the repair/maintenance work needed is within job capabilities of the unit; if not, reports findings to supervisor. Works on self-help projects that are intended to improve facilities. Inspects plumbing fixtures, fittings, and prices to determine if parts or connections are defective by observing leaks or other malfunctions. Repairs ineffective water service/leaky pipes by loosening, tightening, or adjusting valves. Clears stopped up or sluggish drain lines. Inspects facilities interiors for sticking doors or windows, weather stripping, broken or cracked glass, loose hinges and door locks, and insecure molding or trim. Performs maintenance and repairs discrepancies noted above such as rehangs doors, trims sticking doors and windows, replaces broken, split, or rotten interior trim, replaces broken or cracked glass using putty and glaziers points. Inspects exterior structures for deterioration of painted surfaces; for broken, cracked, rotten, warped siding; and reports finding to supervisor. Paints and/or wall papers interior surfaces as required using brushes, rollers, and other standard equipment of the trade. Repairs bulbs, fluorescent fixtures, starters, ballasts, tubes, and outlets. Determines whether the repair/maintenance work needed is within job capabilities of the unit; if not, reports findings to Civil Engineering. Maintains adequate supplies for normal performances of mission. Takes inventory and assures essential supplies are reordered in time to prevent work stoppages. Takes all equipment to proper shops for repairs as required. Submits requests to supervisor for new equipment as needed. Ensures that material and supplies are properly and safely stored, protected, and maintained. Enforces and follows good housekeeping, safety and fire regulations. Uses various hand and power tools such as manual and/or power drills and saws, braces and bits, hammers, chisels, wrenches, screw drivers, key machines, augers, etc., in accomplishing stated tasks/jobs. May be required to operate any of the motor vehicles to include pick-up trucks, sedans, step-vans, etc., for carrying passengers and/or cargo. Performs seasonal tasks as required; such as applying ice control material to entrances of buildings, shoveling snow, picking up litter around buildings, mowing grass, and watering lawns around buildings. Moderate heavy physical effort is required, pushing and moving furniture, furniture set-up and tear down. Performs other related duties as assigned, to include training other employees in the use of various fund equipment, its operation, and how to make minor repairs.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifying Experience:
Requires knowledge of standard surface preparation and painting methods and techniques; knowledge of standard plumbing methods and techniques; and a working knowledge of wood working techniques and basic shop mathematics. Requires skill in the operation of the various tools used in the crafts involved.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
