Duties

Help
  • Works with the public to provide OHV information, conduct permit compliance, and safety inspections.
  • Responds to OHV emergency situations.
  • Greets riders and provides visitor information and education concerning responsible OHV use on public lands.
  • Monitors use for compliance with BLM travel plan rules and regulations, monitors for resource damage to roads/trails and is responsible for trail maintenance.
  • Performs maintenance and monitoring of off-highway vehicle use areas.
  • Conducts Wilderness Study Area and dispersed recreation site management.

Qualifications

This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. If you do not provide evidence that you possess the following selective factor, you will be rated not qualified.

Selective Placement Factor: Experienced skills and ability to traverse expert-level technical terrain with a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV).

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the one year of specialized experience and/or education requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-05 GRADE LEVEL, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:
1) Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience include explaining regulations to park visitors; providing information and advice on park activities and resources; maintaining recreation facilities or trails; or monitoring special recreation permits. Traversing narrow, rocky, technical terrain requiring precise maneuvering with a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV).
2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours of related course work, such as, natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources related to duties performed by a Park Ranger.
3) COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of specialized experience and education as listed above to meet total experience. The combined specialized experience and education must equal 100%.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-07 GRADE LEVEL, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:
1) EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include experience as a park guide or tour leader; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; planning day to day operations of a recreation area providing such facilities as camping, water sports, picnic areas, or coordinating routine activities with maintenance personnel; advising visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities; and collecting fees. Traversing narrow, rocky, technical terrain requiring precise maneuvering with a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV).
2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: One full academic year of graduate education (18 semester hours/27 quarter hours) in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources related to duties performed by a Park Ranger.
3) COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: You may meet the qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying graduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of one year of graduate study leading to a master's degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100 percent.
4) Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) with a bachelor's degree: S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled based on the courses listed above for Education. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

  1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
    3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed at this link: Association of College Honor Societies (external link). Agencies considering eligibility based on any society not included in the following list must ensure that the honor society meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work may take place in extremely remote environments and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
