Duties

Help
  • Assign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Relate appropriate diagnosis and treatment procedures to interpret, analyze and select correct codes.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS LEVEL II coding books.
  • Correlate operation codes with diagnosis codes to ensure the most descriptive code is selected when more than one anatomical location is involved.
  • Code complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures on specific DRGs that are identified as difficult to classify.
  • Assure accurate coding of diseases, injuries, manifestations, operations, and nonsurgical procedures, both complicated and uncomplicated, in accordance with established guidelines and coding principles.
  • Analyze and interpret documentation in record, ensuring accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data and return record to provider/area for correction/completion.
  • Perform various functions involving review, analysis, evaluation, and management coding of diagnostic and treatment procedures contained in outpatient medical records with third party payers.
  • Perform research and coordination to correct inconsistencies or discrepancies in the documentation, and gather/compile various data to produce reports as needed.
  • Perform review of inpatient records to assure the diagnosis responsible for the length of stay is appropriately identified and that the secondary diagnoses are sequenced properly to assure maximum allocation under the DRG system.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes: researching electronic health systems; utilizing various office automated systems and software; collecting information for coding; retrieving medical records and reports from databases; knowledge of basic medical coding. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education:
Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes, 1) Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, major disease process, diagnoses, surgical procedures, tests, and pharmacology; 2) Inpatient coding of medical records using ICD-10-CM for diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS for procedures; AND 3) Reviewing and analyzing medical records for accuracy. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Although not required, the following credentials are preferred: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder.
