Duties

Help
  • Assign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Use the International Classification of Diseases - 10th Revision - Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS) LEVEL II coding books.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements using the ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS LEVEL II coding books.
  • Correlate operation codes with diagnosis codes to ensure the most descriptive code is selected when more than one anatomical location is involved.
  • Assure accurate coding of diseases, injuries, manifestations, operations, and nonsurgical procedures, both complicated and uncomplicated, in accordance with established guidelines and coding principles.
  • Perform quantitative analysis and check medical records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze and interpret documentation in record, ensuring accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data and returns record to provider/area for correction/completion.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • In accordance with BUMEDINST 6220.9B Ch. I, 5B, employees who have direct contact with patients will receive appropriate immunization against communicable diseases unless a current immunization, a protective titer, or a medical exemption documented.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience which includes, 1) Working knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy; 2) Coding physician professional services, to include ambulatory procedures, inpatient or/and outpatient professional services, consultations, clinic and emergency department visits; and 3) Reviewing medical records for accuracy in a hospital setting. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
