The salary range advertised is for the Washington, DC area and may be adjusted based on the geographic locale of the selected applicant.

Conducts research supporting specific assignments in any of the following subject areas: political, military, economic, population, labor force, government structure, technical, or social sciences. Supports senior research analysts by providing research and reference services to federal agency analysts. Uses standard search techniques to obtain reports, data, and infom1ation needed to satisfy program requirements.

Research may include the use of information from foreign languages. Selects, abstracts, and translates data from specific sources. Findings may be communicated orally and/or through written materials, including abstracts, summaries, and graphic products. Verifies information for completeness and accuracy. Screens publications, electronic resources, and topics pertaining to a specialized field, in foreign and domestic arenas. Utilizes Library of Congress collections in conducting research.

Uses knowledge of generally used search techniques and methods to identify specialized information, such as scientific, technical, or area studies. Identifies sources with limited technical complexity such as articles, technical studies, and legislation in domestic and international arenas. Presents findings in proper idiomatic English and in the required format.

Reviews electronic resources, publications, analyses in specialized fields of study both in English and in foreign languages. Prepares responses to various types of inquiries, including electronic, telephone, and written. Communicates with senior FRD analysts to obtain information related to assignments.

Develops and maintains personal contacts throughout the research community to gather and share information and increase knowledge of research and analytical functions.

Contributes to written materials on assigned subjects. Ensures materials selected meet style requirements. Writes various types of documents, including studies, articles, memos, and correspondence. Performs basic checking or editing of style, grammar, and structure in the presentation. Presents research results in written and oral reports, summaries, graphics, and other forms according to FRD standards and Library requirements. May assist in preparing finding aids describing research methods.

Additional information

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid at step one of the grade.

Initial permanent appointments to the Library of Congress require completion of a one-year probationary period. Probationary periods served at other Federal agencies do not count toward this requirement.

The Library of Congress may offer repayment for all or part of federally insured student loans. However, not all service units within the Library of Congress participates in the repayment of federally insured student loans. Therefore, determination to repay a federally insured student loan is subject to approval by the appropriate service unit.

A “Not to Exceed" (NTE) status is used to identify an appointment with a specific ending date. However, the Library has the right to separate a NTE employee at any time due to either performance issues or budget constraints.
