Duties

Help

Provides strategic vision and leadership to the Office of Communications; directs the Office of Communications staff to ensure that our commitment to the customers is met; and oversees the creation of SAA content including newsletters, web content, speeches, messages, guides, policies, reports, presentations, acquisition packets, and other materials. Supports current and future organizational needs through problem solving and development of timely communication methods and plans. Exhibits advanced wide-ranging experience, using in-depth professional knowledge, acumen, concepts and SAA objectives to provide solutions to issues in creative and effective ways. Monitors communication strategies and bridges communications gaps between stakeholders by understanding the interrelationships of different disciplines and guiding development of new ideas, crafting messages to explain those disciplines. Adapts style and uses persuasion in delivering messages that relate to the SAA and networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise. Other duties as assigned

  •  Provides formatting and editorial guidance to staff at all levels of the organization.

Required Work Experience

  • At least 8 years of relevant experience in managing communications. At least 5 years in a management role.

Required Special Skills/ Knowledge

  • Ability to use judgment, leadership, and strategic planning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, employees, Senate and committee staff as well as contractors and other entities with which the Sergeant at Arms does business.
  • Ability to solve problems effectively, and manage staff equitably.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Knowledge of communication plans.

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments to deliver high-quality communications.
  • Proven experience in content creation and editing for publications, websites, and employee portals.
  • Ability to present information so that readers can understand it quickly and easily.
  • Flexibility, ability to prioritize, and ability to meet short deadlines.
  • Three-five years’ experience in the Senate.
  • Knowledge of SAA programs.
  • Ability to work effectively across departments and engage with stakeholders at all levels

Working Conditions

  • Sedentary (carrying items less than 25 pounds)
  • Work is primarily performed in an office setting via computer.
  • There is occasional travel via air, train, and/or car.
  • Periodic onsite meetings will require an onsite presence. Travel to the Washington, D.C. at times is required.
  • This position directly supports essential services of the U.S. Senate. As such, this position requires the employee be available and prepared to work during government shutdowns, in inclement weather, on holidays, weekends, and during late nights to ensure essential services to the Senate continue without interruption.
