The National Wildlife Health Center in the Midcontinent Region of the USGS provides technical assistance and leadership for addressing health issues involving resources under the Department of the Interior stewardship, fosters partnerships with federal, state, and other agencies to address wildlife health as a component of ecosystem health. The Center investigates highly infectious diseases and other diseases affecting a broad spectrum of wildlife by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who provide an integrated program of disease diagnosis, field response, technical assistance, research, training, and support services. The Center's research focuses on understanding the ecology of disease to identify the most vulnerable linkages among affected host species, the disease agent, and environmental factors resulting in disease. Our programs aim to use this information to mitigate factors leading to population decline and result the integration of information to develop effective disease prevention and control strategies to assist resource managers improve management of wildlife populations.

As a Maintenance Worker within the National Wildlife Health Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Conducts work to maintain and operate HVAC/R systems.
  • Conducts work to maintain and operate lab support systems.
  • Operates & performs required preventative maintenance on such equipment as HVAC systems, steam boilers, hot water boilers, incinerators, water hillers, walk-in freezers, diesel- powered electrical generators, HEPA-filtered air exhaust systems, sterilizers, and others
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, & tests new & existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment. Locates & diagnoses trouble occurring in all electrical & control systems and makes all required repairs.
Physical Demands: Work requires heavy physical exertion to manually carry, move, or lift objects and materials weighing up to 50 pounds (unassisted); prolonged standing, walking, bending, climbing; crawling, kneeling, stooping, turning and reaching, potentially in tight areas; moving arms, hands, feet, and legs and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. May work from ladders and scaffolds requiring balance and climbing ability. Incumbent is under a strain required by bending, reaching, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs, and by the vibrations and jerking of equipment. Work is performed in crowded and noisy environments around dust, fumes, and odors.

Work Environment: The work is performed indoors and outdoors. Indoor work may expose the employee to work areas which can be bad-smelling, dirty, greasy, noisy, or smoky. Outdoor work may expose the employee to numerous weather conditions including extreme cold, heat, rain, or snow. Potential serious injury may result from mishandling equipment/tools or from performance of strenuous work-assignments. Protective clothing, eyewear, gloves, and safety shoes may be required for safe performance of duties when working with caustic cleaning agents, pesticides, machinery, and power equipment.
