Duties

Help

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team in the Special Proceedings Division (SPD) of the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia (USAODC). You will serve as the substantive and technical expert in providing paralegal advice to the Chief, Deputy Chiefs, and Assistant United States Attorneys on sentence reduction litigation and related matters, including issues and changes arising from a variety of statutory developments and court rulings.

Typical work assignments will include:
- Manages, tracks and assists in formulating responses to the Division's sentence reduction litigation and related matters in U.S. District Court and D.C. Superior Court.
- Updates and maintains research databases of significant criminal legal opinions and defendants released pursuant to sentence reduction litigation and related matters.
- Gathers and synthesizes the large number of documents that must be considered in assessing motions for reduction of sentence and related matters.
- Independently drafts and develops pleadings, responses to sentence reduction motions, summary overviews and post-appeal challenges.
- Conducts research of policies, procedures, laws, precedents and statistics pertaining to sentence reduction issues and other issues arising in post-conviction matters.
- Assists in formulating responses to expert reports proffered by the defense (regarding e.g., defendant's dangerousness or mental health issues) and, if appropriate, helps to identify experts that the government may retain to rebut the defense expert reports..
- Utilizes in-depth knowledge of criminal law, with particular emphasis on the specialized and complex body of law applicable to sentence reductions motions and, more broadly, to collateral attacks including post-conviction mental health matters.
- Manages other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

To qualify as a GS-12 Paralegal Specialist, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.

Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience in demonstrates a basic knowledge of, and skill in applying, legal sources and reference material such as precedential opinions, case law, legislative history, legal periodicals, Federal Rules of Criminal and Appellate Procedures, JURIS, and related sources (including medical and psychological records) sufficient to analyze and evaluate the legal and factual questions which arise in the conduct of specialized legal programs and a broad array of post-conviction matters (including, e.g., various types of sentence reduction motions and motions based on mental health status). Examples of such experience are: performing extensive and thorough legal research into the legislative history, precedential cases, decisions, and opinions applicable to particular sentence reduction, mental health, and other types of post-conviction motions; investigating and becoming thoroughly familiar with subject matter details involved in a case or legal matter; determining the specific data needed and best approach to obtain data or to determine the relevance or sufficiency of available legal, technical, or other related data; coordinating actions with other Federal agencies or State and local jurisdictions that have closely related responsibilities.
