Help

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Environmental Health, Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) seeking a motivated officer to serve as Environmental Health Scientist (O-5 Billet/Non-Supervisory). The PHS officer selected for this assignment will serve as a scientist in the evaluation of maritime environmental public health issues and health hazards.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Conduct operational sanitation inspections of cruise ships and produces a report of public health violations and recommendations.
  • Design, oversee, implement, and conduct major scientific surveys/studies or projects
  • Identify and analyze environmental public health issues and their impact on operations
  • Develop and or use innovative methodologies and techniques
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to national, state and local health agencies and to other organizations
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation

  • Must meet USPHS Commissioned Corps basic readiness.
  • Must not have any current or pending adverse actions
  • May be subject to a Background Investigation.
  • May be required to obtain at least a Secret or higher-level clearance.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/) at the time the degree was obtained.

Qualifications and Skills


The position requires qualifications and skills to include specialized experience. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the CC-O4 billet grade level to include experience investigating gastrointestinal illness and other infectious disease outbreaks and providing public health recommendations and oversight to control ongoing outbreaks and preventing future outbreaks.

Education

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

Salary:Please note that the salary is dependent on factors such as officer's rank, years in service, and location of duty station.

Relocation expenses are authorized per Joint Travel Regulations (JTR).
