Duties

Help
  • Operates heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, brush chippers, and all types of hand and light power tools.
  • Moves furniture, removes, and sets signs, paints picnic tables and signs, rakes and waters lawns, trims trees and shrubbery, picks up litter, cleans and repairs fire pits.
  • Occasionally operates flat deck pontoon boats to access shoreline recreation sites to conduct maintenance operations such as; cleaning and restocking bathrooms, removing trash, replacing and/or repairing mooring and/or fee tubes, and landscaping.
  • Works under general supervision completing assigned duties after receiving initial oral or written instructions, completes assignments on own initiative.
  • The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified:

  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Interior Motorboat Operator Certification (MOCC) for the occasional motorboat operation.
  • A valid state Driver's License is required for this position.
  • Have the ability to do the work of a Laborer without more than normal supervision.
  • Lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.
OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining your qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Laborer without more than normal supervision. Examples of specialized experience include: mowing lawns, weeding, planting and fertilizing grass, performing minor facility repairs such as unclogging drains, repairing leaks and changing light bulbs, brush cutting and removal using power tools.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance. During motor vehicle operation, the driver exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Exerting moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo, with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.

Work Environment: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts, and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
