Duties

Help

Provides leadership and direction to the Correctional Services department in institutional security, inmate conduct and discipline, inmate work, control of hazardous tools and material, safety, sanitation, control and use of institution vehicles, and key control.

Inspects facilities, observes personnel and inmates from the standpoint of security, morale and employee-inmate relations, and overall program coordination.

Serves as an advisor to the institution Warden and the Complex Captain in the formulation and implementation of institution policies, procedures and programs.

Completes performance evaluations, makes decisions on work problems presented by the lieutenants, locksmith, and other subordinate staff.

Analyzes custodial and security needs by determining the composition of correctional posts to maximize utilization of available resources.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staffs' correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements:

Education:

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.

Experience:

You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade in the normal line of progression. This experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

  • Experience with applying counseling and guidance skills and techniques in order to effectively influence the attitudes, behavior and work habits of staff and interpersonal communications in order to instruct, advise and provide information and training.
  • Experience with making sound decisions in emergency situations where the decisions could result in severe consequences such as loss of life or destruction of property.
  • Experience developing the institution budget and specifically prepares the annual and quarterly budget for his department.
  • Experience contributing to and participating in meetings and conferences in which policies are formulated, decisions reached, budgetary matters discussed, and plans made on administrative operations.
  • Experience planning, organizing and reviewing work, administering personnel matters, and dealing effectively with employees and union representatives regarding employee-management concerns.

This position IS NOT included in the bargaining unit.

In accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3307, a maximum entry age of 36 has been established for initial appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution.

The representative rate for this position is $115,922 per annum ($55.54 per hour).

Special Conditions of Employment Section:

Initial appointment to a supervisory/managerial position requires a one-year probationary period.

The incumbent is subject to geographic relocation to meet the needs of the agency.

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks.

All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.

The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score of 68 must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.

Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques," three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
