Help
  • Provides technically sound decisions and recommendations that can be relied upon as final commitments for the district as a senior level subject matter expert pertaining to geology/hydrogeology and geotechnical investigations.
  • Possesses expert knowledge and understanding related to regulations, standards, remediation techniques and methods.
  • Possesses expert knowledge and understanding related to geological/hydrogeological concepts and principles.
  • Participates and represents USACE on regional and national bodies discussing matters pertaining to geology/hydrogeology and geotechnical investigations techniques, hydrogeology, geology and remediation methods.
  • Develops and provides training opportunities, mentorship, courses, and seminars on the use of new or newly developed equipment and methods for conducting geology/hydrogeology and geotechnical investigations.
  • Provides technical reviews to ensure methodologies are appropriately applied and provides geology/hydrogeology and geotechnical review of documents for consistency with policy/guidance.
  • Provides technical leadership in the development of common and innovative approaches to resolve common and unique geology/hydrogeology and geotechnical problems.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The duties of this position requires a Registration as a Professional Geologist (P.G.).
  • The duties of this position requires Travel up to approximately 50% of the time to attend meeting or review field operations. Frequent travel is required.
  • The duties of this position require regular and recurring field operations with exposure to moderate risks and discomforts.
  • Incumbent wears protective equipment/clothing when working in such environments such as extremes of temperature, or humidity, and adverse weather conditions.
  • The duties of this position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • The work in the office environment is primarily sedentary, however the position at times requires some physical exertion while conducting oversight of field operations.
  • May require lifting and carrying weights, periods of extended standing, sitting, and bending, and exposure to varying climatic conditions.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Geologist (1350):

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience and must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for indicating clearly the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions.)

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes; 1.) technical expertise with planning, directing, and evaluating geotechnical and geology/hydrogeology investigations to include making recommendations utilizing innovative technologies and 2.) Technical expertise related to developing and managing field investigations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
