Duties

Help

The incumbent will:

  • Denies admission to undesirable or unauthorized persons, prevents unauthorized removal of Gallery property, answers inquiries from visitors and aids persons in distress.
  • Serves at stationary posts or patrols heavily trafficked public areas or locations that are vulnerable to crimes against persons, theft, vandalism and other damage.
  • Possess knowledge of emergency alarms and fire procedures.
  • Possess knowledge of First aid and CPR.
  • Possess knowledge of pertinent laws relating to arrests, arrest authority and procedures, search, seizure and detention of persons.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain a pleasant and tactful manner towards coworkers, Gallery staff, supervisors, and the public at all times.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience StatementCandidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal GS-5 level, such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis.

Note: Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.

Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must meet the criteria for veterans’ preference unless there are more vacancies than eligible veterans in the applicant pool. Must be able to lift and carry an unconscious person, with the assistance of one other person. Must be able to stoop and bend. Must be able to carry a 20 pound object without assistance. Must be able to climb and descend two flights of steps quickly, without difficulty. Must be able to stand 2.5 hours, without a break, on a daily basis. Must be able to stand every work day for cumulative total of 5 hours and 40 minutes. Must be able to work in closed and confined spaces, such as a security booth and underground facilities. Must have the agility and ability to subdue violent suspects. Must be able to hear conversational voice and radio transmissions, and able to convey information via portable radio and telephone at a normal conversational volume. Must be able to obtain and maintain a state Drivers License. Incumbent has 90 days after date of hire to obtain a valid state Driver’s License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Incumbent is required to qualify annually (at a minimum) with the standard firearm. Failure to re-qualify will result in removal from the position.
  • All applicants appointed to Law Enforcement positions must attend and successfully complete NGA training program. Applicants who fail to successfully meet this requirement will be subject to termination.
  • You must not have a history of domestic violence or child abuse/sexual abuse.
  • You must be able to become Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid qualified and have the ability to read and understand written material in language of the security force.
  • Lautenberg Amendment: This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. A person convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence is not eligible for the position.
