Summary

Employee serves as Maintenance Mechanic within the Facilities Management Service, Engineering Branch at the Orlando VA Medical Center and will be responsible for the daily maintenance and operation of a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. Typical work assignments include visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for, and the performance of, repair work in maintenance trades.

Help

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure that operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical aspects of the facility are maintained
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs dietetic equipment, ward furniture, door hardware, and other metal parts of buildings and equipment.
  • Uses blueprints to identify potential electrical hazards when assisting trades craftsman.
  • Plan and lay out routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment.
  • Utilizes trowel (efficiently) in spreading mortar and finishing joints and in the use of gauge line, spirit level and plumb bob in obtaining straight courses.
  • Creates layouts for routing, placement, pitch, elevation, and pressure reduction of various Position Description piping systems

Work Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, Sunday - Thursday: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; 3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.; 11:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/21/2025.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Employee may frequently work in hot, humid, confined spaces around equipment and systems associated with facilities. They must climb ladders, bend, crouch, stoop and endure prolonged periods of standing and walking. Employee must lift parts and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. Must be physically fit as work involves lifting, pulling, climbing, crawling, working with hands over head, working in confined areas and using arm and back muscles. Employee must possess ability to be on feet for long periods either standing, walking, working off ladder or staging materials and lifting equipment.

Working Conditions: Employee may be required to work in areas of high temperature, cold temperature, constant noise, chemical fumes, dirt, soot, rotating equipment, oil and grease. Work is performed inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather, wet, cramped locations; is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises, toxic fumes, gases and acids. Assist in other crafts within the Engineering Services.

Must be aware of safety hazards and know what action should be taken to avoid them. Observe all local and National Safety Codes. Must know and comply with all the safety factors of the various trades to prevent fires and injury to patients and personnel. May be in an environment where it will be required to wear a respirator and disposable clothing including coveralls and cover for head, hands and feet.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
