Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS) is looking for energetic, enthusiastic, and exceptional people to support the United States Navy Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) is focused on providing customers with quality, timely and cost efficient maintenance, modernization, and technical and logistics support.

The Work Study program is designed to provide work experience in a variety of trades and industrial settings.

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • You must be enrolled at an accredited school on a full-time basis in a study program leading to a high school diploma or a post-secondary technical certificate following normal completion of the senior year or certificate completion requirements.
  • Currently enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE or Post-Secondary Technology or Trade Certificate Programs or equivalent course.
  • Required to maintain at least a 2.0 scholastic average as a student that is predictive of graduation.
  • Must be recommended by the school representative (CTE or Career Instructor or Counselor) and selected by the activity for student trainee position.

Education

QUALIFYING EDUCATION:

1) Enrollment in a high school whose curriculum has been approved by a State or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum that has been approved by such a body or a State; and

2) Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education: (i) A technical or vocational school; (ii) A 2-year or 4-year college or university; (iii) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or (iv) A home-school curriculum.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you must submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume. PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:
Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.
To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:

~Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
~Complete their degree or certificate requirements
~Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
~Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and
~Perform their job successfully

The Pathways appointment has an initial appointment at the GS-01 grade level. There is no guarantee of future employment beyond the completion of the second work period. However, the agency will have 120 days to non-competitively convert the student to a Career Conditional WG-01 Helper Trainee position, provided they have acquired no less than 640 hours of documented work experience, and meet all entry requirements of the Helper Program. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.

The Work Study program is designed to provide work experience on or in support of naval maintenance and repair projects under the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility Command in Kitsap County of the State of Washington. Work assignments will be at the Bremerton, WA worksite.

Work assignments will be of a rotational nature to provide the applicant with experience of up to 15 trades or projects.

Credit for work experience credits and/or Career and Technical Education (CTE) credits may be available via the educational institutions career and technical advisors.

Applicants must be available to work the normal dayshift, full time during both of the following defined work periods:

  • Work Period 1: June 23 through August 22, 2025. 44 regular workdays - 352 work hours available.
  • Work Period 2: February 23 thru June 27, 2026. 87 Regular workdays - 704 work hours available.
Work assignments will be of a rotational nature to provide the applicant with experience of up to 15 trades or projects.

Selectees will be Excepted Service Appointments as Pathways - Internships under 5 CFR362.201. Program participants must complete their Certificate/Degree requirements and acquire no less than 640 hours of work experience in order to be eligible for non-competitive conversion to Civil Service Career-Conditional Appointments.

If converted to the competitive service, the competitive service appointment has promotion potential to the WG-5 grade level. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and a current student enrolled in:
1) A high school or home-school curriculum approved by a State or local governing body;
2) An accredited college (including technical, vocational trade schools, two or four year colleges/universities);
3) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school, etc.); or
4) A Certificate Program in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study, that is part of an accredited, college-level, technical, trade, vocational or business school curriculum. Short-term training and/or certificate programs (i.e., several two-week programs completed or class sessions attended over a period of two years) that are not required for the position or which lack sufficient academic rigor, are not considered an acceptable academic course of study.
