Duties

Help
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in fields relevant to research focus areas.
  • Analyze and interpret research findings, contributing to the publication of results inreputable journals.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and various external partners on research projects.
  • Mentor and supervise undergraduate researchers, providing guidance on research projects.
  • Teach one course, contributing to the educational mission of the sponsoring department.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Frequent travel may be required. Required travel could range from approximately 25% up to 50%(depending on research area).
  • Three-year trial (i.e. probationary) period may be required.
  • PCS/Relocation Incentive is not authorized.
  • Must meet minimum OPM qualification and education requirements.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
  • This position requires onsite presence at the primary duty station of West Point, (New York), for instruction as well as at the assigned laboratory space at DEVCOM ARL (Maryland).
  • Depending on the research area, the frequency and duration of laboratory duty time may vary. Employees should expect travel time that may be extensive.
  • Methods of reimbursement for travel/temporary duty time(TDY) may vary and will be authorized as appropriate.
  • Telework may be authorized consistent with mission needs. Remote work is not authorized.

Qualifications

OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH FOCUS AREAS:
-Quantum Information
-Photovoltaic Cells
-Advanced Scintillation (with anticipated 3D printing of scintillators)
-Applied Mathematics (with an emphasis in data analysis and/or data visualization)
-Applied Statistics (with an emphasis on probability theory and statistical programming)

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in a scientific or engineering area that is appropriate for the position.

In addition to meeting the minimum education requirement, applicants will be further evaluated on the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) needed for this position, including the following:

1.Teaching: Skill in the instruction of undergraduate courses in mathematics, computer science, engineering, and chemical, biological, and/or physical sciences. This includes course development, faculty development, student/cadet development, institutional service and advising students on capstone/research projects.

2.Research: Ability to conduct research using experimental methods to develop theoretical, analytic, computational and/or experimental studies applicable to Army priorities.

3.Communication: Ability to effectively convey and exchange information, ideas, and feedback with others in written and oral form. Communicate results through reports,scientific publications, and presentations.

4.Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Ability to analyze and propose solutions to complex problems. Ability to critically to assess a situation and come up with logical conclusions based on the available facts and information.

5.Collaboration and Teamwork: Ability to work closely with other scientists to develop comprehensive solutions. Work effectively with others to develop shared ideas, and to achieve common outcomes.

In this position, the incumbent will serve on a Davies Fellowship, a joint effort between U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and the United States Military Academy (USMA) with the goal of providing postdoctoral scientists and engineers the exciting opportunity serve dual roles by teaching in academic department at USMA and conducting research in a technical Directorate at DEVCOM ARL. At USMA, teaching experience is gained under the guidance of senior faculty mentors. At ARL, valuable research experience is realized by working on problems of interest to the U.S. Army.

This position is covered under an alternative personnel system known as the Army Futures Command (AFC) Science and Technology Reinvention Laboratory (STRL) Demonstration Project. The Demonstration replaces GS grade levels with occupational families and pay bands. The full-performance level of this position is DB-03.
