Help

The Supervisory Research Ecologist is responsible for SERC’s program in the application of technological innovations to ecology research.

In this position, you will:

  • Supervise staff in SERC’s Technological Innovations in Ecology research program.
  • Integrate instruments, electronic sensors, computer code, and physical infrastructure to observe and experimentally manipulate ecological phenomena in field and laboratory settings.
  • Contribute to innovative and competitive research proposals to obtain extramural funding.
  • Publish and disseminate research findings.
  • Provide professional service to the field of ecological research.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification Requirements:

Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

You must submit a copy of your unofficial college transcripts for verification to be considered.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the specialized experience and/or education requirements listed below:

GS-13 Experience:You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as obtaining funding for, leading, and publishing research using and integrating instruments, electronic sensors, computer code, and/or physical infrastructure to investigate terrestrial, wetland, or aquatic ecology.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Leadership and Project Management, including ability to conduct and complete assignments for creation, maintenance, and operational management of a research program in Technological Innovation Ecology.
  2. Research that addresses ecological knowledge gaps or tests ecological principles using scientific methods that require integration of instruments, electronic sensors, computer code, physical infrastructure, and data analysis.
  3. Entrepreneurship, including ability to conceive and create innovative research proposals that are successful in receiving funding from competitive internal and/or extramural sponsors.
  4. Communication skills including the ability to disseminate research findings through publication in the peer-reviewed literature and presentations of research results at professional meetings and conferences.
  5. Provide service to professionals in the field of ecology including peer review, external advisory panels, leadership in professional societies, organization of external workshops, and public engagement.
