  • This is a developmental position; duties listed below will be performed in a developmental capacity at the GS-5/6 grade level. At the full performance, GS-7, the incumbent will:
  • Responsible for the receipt and effective evaluation of 911 emergency calls.
  • Responsible for determining nature of the call. Prioritizes all incoming emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Identifies the determinant and level of response and provides this and any additional information to the responding units.
  • Provides emergency medical dispatching (EMD) assistance to callers with medical emergencies using the local authority emergency medical dispatch system.
  • Monitors status and availability of police, fire and medical units to assure an appropriate response is made.
  • Maintains reports and retrieves needed statistical information using the fire incident reporting system(s).

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify at the GS-05 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience using a computer keyboard to operate a variety of computer software, receiving calls for services, and creating clerical reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

To qualify at the GS-06 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience receiving and evaluating service-related calls; and questioning callers to determine problem/nature of call to inform appropriate personnel or assign equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

To qualify at the GS-07 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience receiving and evaluating emergency calls; determine problem/nature of call in order to dispatch appropriate emergency personnel and equipment or respond to an emergency; and/or providing basic instructions prior to arrival of responders. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/ level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For the GS-6 or GS-7 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

GS-07 Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
