Summary

These positions are located with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Pacific West Area (PWA), at the Western Human Nutrition Research Center, in Davis, California.

  • Duties listed represent the full performance level of the position.
  • Participates in the design, planning and implementation of well-precedented research projects using standard methods and techniques.
  • Collects, compiles, and analyzes dietary intake assessment data in nutrition research studies.
  • Reviews and tests methods and tools used to collect data on dietary intakes.
  • Performs computations to convert and compile data for review and analysis and conducts validity checks of data.
  • Schedules and prepares human study participants for specific nutrition research procedures, explains the various study activities and conducts study activities including dietary assessments, questionnaires, and physical measurements.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements for GS-0630:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements for all grade levels:

  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.
  • Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

AND
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled and which provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the duties of the position.

GS-07
Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-05 grade level or its non-federal equivalent, participating in food and nutrition research; compiling data sets of scientific information; and selecting and applying data collection and sampling techniques.
OR

Education: Successful completion of one (1) full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree. Related degrees include Nutrition, Public Health, Applied Science, Food Science, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or Epidemiology.
OR

SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT (SAA): Completion of a bachelor's degree, with Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.). Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, as described above. S.A.A. is based on (1) A grade point average of B (a GPA of 3.0 or higher) for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last 2 full years of undergraduate study; OR (2) A grade point average of B (a GPA of 3.5 or higher) for all courses in your major field of study, or those courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; OR (3) Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision; OR (4) Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.
OR

A combination of graduate education and experience as described above.

GS-09
Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 grade level or its non-federal equivalent, assessing and designing participant diets; designing, planning, or implementing a food or nutrition research project; conducting tests of human nutrition; and collecting, analyzing, or interpreting nutrition research data.
OR

Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree, if related. Related degrees include Nutrition, Public Health, Applied Science, Food Science, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or Epidemiology.
OR

A combination of graduate education and experience as described above.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
