Help

Duties include but not limited to:

  • The Grounds Maintenance Worker duties at this level include the maintenance and repair of the hospital campus structures and grounds maintenance, which includes: related utilities, carpentry work, painting, masonry work, electrical repairs, network operated irrigation control repair and operation, tree and shrub maintenance, pest control, and storm water/down spout maintenance and repair. The Grounds Maintenance Worker will work from sketches, work orders, basic blueprints, and instructions which illustrate job requirements, materials, and methods to be used.
  • The incumbent will demonstrate woodworking techniques and basic shop mathematics and skills in the usage of measuring tapes, squares, levels, and other carpentry tools used to plan, lay out, measure, cut, construct and install materials according to dimensional requirements and specifications. He/she will demonstrate a working knowledge of material strengths and applications. The Grounds Maintenance Worker demonstrates skill in the use and operation of a variety of hand and/or power tools such as; tree clippers, hedge trimmers, shovels, rakes, leaf blowers, chain saws, hammers, hand saws, drills, planes, routers, screwdrivers, nail guns, fasteners, glue guns, metal shears, screw guns, power saws, and power sanders, and planes. The incumbent will operate various motor vehicles including periodically operating a backhoe. The incumbent will repair benches, partitions, frames, tables, floors, sidewalks, roads, flower beds, roofing, irrigation systems, and wheelchairs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/PD603770
Physical Requirements: The Grounds Maintenance Worker performs normal tasks requiring moderate physical exertion, including frequent medium lifting (up to 50 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and negotiating confined spaces. Heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion is occasionally necessary. The incumbent will be required to work in a variety of work sites, including roofs, scaffolds, crawl spaces, ladders, etc. The employee must be able to distinguish colors. The employee is standing or waking most of the time.
Working Conditions: The working conditions vary with the environment. It may be inside or outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, greasy, and may be in inclement weather. Electrical shock is a real and present danger in the performance of this job. The incumbent may be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and/or chemical agents are present. The incumbent will be exposed to raw sewage of a hospital that carries every disease of the patients it serves. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance As part of the medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualification for duty.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The ability to do the position of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. Experience includes but not limited to: Familiar with general physical characteristics, habits, harborages, and food sources of the more common pests, and also with the characteristics, purposes, and restrictions of commonly used insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and fungicides. The incumbent will weigh, measure, and mix pesticide emulsions and baits in accordance with directions and safety procedures and perform arithmetic calculations to determine rate, use, and quantity of pesticides. skill in pruning and trimming shrubs, trees, and other plants to remove obvious defects and excess branches. He she will also show skill in pruning to obtain a proper balance between roots and top growth. The incumbent will reshape tree wounds by bark tracing to stimulate the flow of healing sap and growth of tissue over the wound; when large areas of a tree are diseased or injured; he/she will hollow the area so that it will drain properly. Employ methods in the location, recognition, control, and prevention of common household, structural, nuisance, and plant pests such as ants, mosquitoes, cockroaches, rats, mice, and broadleaf, etc.

Preferred experience: ISDA Private Applicators License

Driver's License: A current, valid state-issued Driver's License is required for this position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
