Duties

Help
  • Manage the Campbell Creek Science Center which engages all learners in outdoor experiences that increase appreciation, connection, and stewardship of Alaska’s public lands and natural and cultural resources.
  • Provide in-person and virtual education, interpretation, and outreach to approximately 40,000 participants annually across the state in support of the Alaska Education, Interpretation and Youth Engagement (EIYE) stepdown strategy.
  • Provide professional trainings for private and public entities in Alaska and across the United States to increase their capacity and delivery of high quality EIYE visitor services programming.
  • Manage strategic direction of the site, budget for operations and labor and supervision of staff. Responsible for overall management and leadership of the facility including a budget for operations and labor of approximately $1 million dollars.
  • Manage programs and priorities including long range and strategic planning, interpretation, education, youth and outreach program design and review, outside organizations, visitor services and resource stewardship.

  • An applicant appointed to this position must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position.
  • May require a one-year probationary period.
  • If selected, you will be required to obtain and maintain Basic First Aid and CPR Certification (or higher-level certification) for the duration of appointment.

Qualifications

In addition to the positive education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal Service Specialized experience is defined as: 1) experience serving as the principal coordinator and technical advisor for visitor services programs impacting a wide geographic area; 2) utilization of a wide range of concepts, principles, and practices including interpretation, environmental education, visitor services, outreach planning and implementation; 3) experience coordinating, planning, and overseeing environmental education programs; 4) management of site safety regulations and procedures to ensure a safe and secure work environment; 5) formulation and management of program training plans, staff evaluations, assignment of tasks and priorities, and counseling subordinates; and 6) coordination with managers, planners, and resource specialists on park administration, environmental education, interpretation, visitor services, and/or outdoor recreation planning to identify program requirements and resource needs.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands:
You may be required to walk moderately long distances over rough terrain, icy conditions, snow and non-paved trails during normal work.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position in such subjects as: natural resources (forestry, range, etc.), communications, business, philosophy, biological (wildlife or fisheries), administration, management, history, realty, planning, recreation, fire ecology, geography, or public affairs.

OR

A combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study.
