Duties

Help

As a Plant Mechanic with the Bureau of Reclamation, major duties and responsibilities include (and not limited to):

  • Performing a full range of mechanical work necessary for the maintenance, overhaul and repair of hydroelectric generating equipment and systems.
  • Operating and maintaining a variety of hoisting equipment including bridge and gantry cranes, monorail cranes, and other hoisting equipment.
  • Applying welding and brazing techniques for repairs and metal fabrications.
  • Rebuilding a variety of equipment, components, and systems to restore and maintain operations.
  • Performing precision machining operations to repair components and to fabricate parts from stock material.
  • Following occupational safety rules and procedures and managing clearances in accordance with the OSHA standard for The Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout) (29 CFR 1910.147).
  • Performing other duties as assigned within this classification.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a gantry or overhead crane operator certification in accordance with the OSHA industry standards.
  • This position is designated as a MODERATE RISK Public Trust position. It requires a fully completed and favorably adjudicated Public Trust Suitability Background Investigation (T2S or T2RS or equivalent) that is current (within the last 5 years). This is a condition of employment.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Minimum qualifications for trades and labor positions are determined by evaluation of job elements. You must meet at least 2 points on the screen-out element(s) and obtain an average of at least 2 points on all the job elements to be considered qualified for this position.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and/or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours worked per week.

Reclamation has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

Physical Effort: Position duties require the ability to safely handle and carry moderately heavy loads weighing up to 50 pounds. The duties require the ability to pull, push, reach, bend, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, squat, work overhead and work at elevated heights (i.e., scaffolding and ladders).

Working Conditions: Requires the ability to safely and efficiently work alone and with others. The majority of duties are performed in an industrial work environment. Some work is performed within confined spaces. Work is performed on or around moving equipment and energized sources. May travel to remote locations. May be exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust particles, heat, noise, fumes, and/or vapors. May be required to wear a respirator in certain spaces while performing duties.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Category rating and selection procedures will be used to evaluate applications from this announcement.
