Summary

This position is located with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Pacific West Area (PWA), Commodity Protection & Quality Research Unit (CPQRU) in Parlier, CA and will provide research support to the Supervisory Research Scientist.

This is a Term Appointment NTE 13 months with the option to extend up to 10 years. Decision to extend will be determined by the supervisor.

Duties

Help
  • Develops and implements research program within scope and objectives provided by the Supervisory Research Plant Pathologist and the research team in the area of post-harvest fruit rot diseases and fruit quality of fresh fruits.
  • Collaborates with the Supervisory Research Plant Pathologist and other research scientists in the team in planning new projects.
  • Defines problems and designs specific research approaches, actively participates in the modification of existing methods of analysis or the development of new techniques in order to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Maintains research records, summarizes data, performs statistical analyses, and prepares data in a form suitable for oral presentations, technical reports or manuscripts.
  • Publishes research findings in appropriate scientific journals.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements:
GS-0434
Degree: Plant pathology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 20 semester hours in basic botany or plant science, and 10 semester hours in plant pathology.

AND
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled and which provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

Experience:The qualification requirements for this position at the GS-11 grade level includes one-year specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level, or its non-Federal equivalent: conducting research on control of postharvest fruit rot diseases of fresh fruits such as blueberry, citrus, table grapes and others; conducting research on fungicide resistance in plant pathogens; publishing research results on postharvest diseases of fresh fruits in peer-reviewed journals.
OR
Education: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Related degrees may include plant pathology, microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, molecular genetics, or population genetics.
OR
Combination of Education & Experience: A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
