Help

As a Supervisory Biologist (Deputy Director) within the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Oversee and manage broad, multi-disciplinary research program. Advise Center Director (CD) on course and conduct of program. Work with CD to certify scientific merit of program. Assist in identifying and developing new scientific initiatives. Coordinates with multiple types of entities to assist in implementation of research program.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Center staff. Review study plans and publications as assigned by CD. Advises CD of any sensitive issues and/or products. Responds to outside requests and directives relating to research programs.
  • Leads formulation, implementation, coordination, administration and management of all programs delegated by CD.
  • With CD, plans, coordinates, and implements natural resource partnerships. Represents Center at meeting with potential partners.
  • Represents Center at conferences and professional meetings. Maintains close liaison and working relations with scientific community and with federal personnel in DOI, USGS and other natural resource agencies.
  • Serves as Acting CD in absence of CD with full delegations of authority.
  • Supervises assigned Center staff, including research scientists. Works with CD to develop and implement Center career development and training program. Counsels employees on work and administrative matters Resolves complaints and assists CD in resolving any disciplinary actions. Assist in ensuring compliance with directives addressing EEO, safety, discrimination in the workplace, sexual harassment, and ethics within Center.
Work Environment and Physical Demands: Deputy may be required to go into field with various projects as needed to gain an understanding of Center research on the landscape. Research involves several approaches including mechanistic field studies, manipulative experiments, descriptive studies, long-term resource monitoring, quantitative modeling, and status and trends analysis. Research is conducted at several spatial scales including continental or broad regions, ecoregions spanning multiple biomes or ecosystems, ecological subregions, localized habitat, and field enclosures or microcosms. Research addresses multiple levels of biological organization including whole ecosystems, terrestrial or aquatic communities, species populations, and individual organisms.

Duty Station TBD - The duty station of this position may be any USGS location that is agreed upon by the selecting official and the selectee. If the agreed upon location results in the relocation of the selectee, the travel, transportation, and relocation expenses may be authorized.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-14:

In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.

Examples of GS-13 level work may include: 1) planning and leading biology projects of substantial depth and/or breadth; 2) analyzing and interpreting biological related project data with novel and obscure problems and publishing or preparing results of findings; 3) developing new or significantly modified biological techniques, methods, or criteria; 4) providing advisory, planning, or reviewing services as a technical specialist on a biological issue. For examples 1-4, the work provided wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
