Summary

This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Northeast Area (NEA), at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) in Beltsville, MD.

In this position, you will perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and mobile equipment, including tractors with tow or attachment equipment, backhoes, trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, automobiles, buses, forklifts, and warehouse tractors.

Duties

Help
  • Make repairs by removing, replacing, adjusting, installing, or cleaning defective parts or components.
  • Use motor vehicle on-board computers to diagnose problems and electronic analyzers to test automotive computer control systems and emission systems.
  • Set and align headlights and emergency equipment to specifications.
  • Turn brake rotors and drums, turn stators, replace pads, overhaul wheel and master cylinders, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Troubleshoot problems on diesel engines (i.e., combustion-powered generator systems including load equalizing units) and perform maintenance and repairs.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 01/02/2025. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Automotive Mechanic without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Physical Effort
The work requires crawling under vehicles, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and arm and leg movement, and various strained and uncomfortable positions for a considerable portion of working time. Close hand-and-eye coordination is required in performing critical assembly and adjustment tasks. Frequent lifting, pulling, pushing, handling, and carrying of parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with support or with mechanical devices is required.

Working Conditions
The incumbent works both inside and outside. Work is usually performed on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, dust, dirt, grease, and fumes from vehicles. The incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, strains and falls on slippery floors. Outside work requires the incumbent to service vehicles and machinery in all types of weather and requires repair for on-and-off road service. The incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes, and glasses.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
